Seafood supplier and food producer Safcol has opened its purpose-built Thebarton fish market.
The move marks a significant investment in the future of SA’s seafood industry and comes as Safcol invests $80m in a new purpose-built food manufacturing facility in Adelaide’s north.
The Thebarton facility at 36 West Thebarton Rd replaces the previous market and provides a more modern and efficient hub for the state’s fresh seafood industry.
It cost $11m to purchase the land and build the new fish market, which features upgraded auction facilities, advanced digital systems, new refrigeration infrastructure, forklifts, customer amenities and improved parking.

A digital auction and traceability system that electronically assigns fish batches to the fisherman who caught them is a highlight of the new facility as it streamlines operations and improves efficiency during auctions.
The market also had three purpose-built auction stands designed to support growing demand and future industry needs.
Safcol Australia chief executive Andrew Mitchell said the market would be an important service that supports local fishermen, seafood wholesalers, retailers and restaurateurs.

“By providing this service, we help deliver high quality, fresh Australian seafood to consumers while supporting the livelihoods of local fishermen.”

The fish market opening follows Safcol’s announcement that it will invest $80m in a new Edinburgh food manufacturing facility, which will replace its existing Elizabeth factory over the next two years and double its production capacity.
Safcol was originally established as the South Australian Fishing Co Op but has evolved into one of the country’s leading food manufactures.
It produces baby food, soups and canned vegetables for a number of retail brands and supermarket private labels from its Adelaide factory, as well as processing Australian abalone for export markets.
